SUMMER DESIGN/BUILD STUDIO

RE-NEW Freret Street
Summer Design- Build Studio
New Orleans, LA
May 26-July 13, 2008

This is an opportunity to design the public space along a small commercial main street in New Orleans, known as the Freret Street Corridor, as economic invigoration of a neighborhood.

Design Corps will partner with Neighborhood Housing Services, a national non-profit with local roots on Freret Street, the street where we will spend our rime, talent and energy.  NHS has submitted a proposal to the City to fulfill a Request for Proposal. “Critical Project #3” of the proposal is for Streetscape Improvements along with a critical goal of Economic Development.  See link to PDF.

NHS has established working relationships with local merchants, residents and children who will work with us to provide the participatory aspect of the program. They have already established a successful farmers market in the three block zone.

The Design/Build project will (most likely) be a bus shelter. Other non-built proposal will maximize the impact and new vision for the three-block stretch.  See map in linked PDF.  The latest models of design activism and public practice will be studied in a Community Context class.

Primary teacher will be Bryan Bell, Executive Director of Design Corps and Editor of Good Deeds, Good Design: Community Service through Architecture.  Bryan Bell has supervised over twenty design/build project, including eleven as a thesis advisor at the Rural Studio.

Guest speakers including Scott Ball will present over the studio.  The Glass Blowing Studio at Tulane has expressed interest in collaborating on the project as well.
