Summer Design/Build Studio
Summer Design- Build Studio New Orleans, LA May 25 - July 3, 2009
Application deadline for 2009 Summer Studio is April 18, 2009.

The Design Corps Summer Studio functions as an independent training center for community
service, designing and building to meet local needs. The purpose of the
studio is to provide the benefits of quality design to communities
through inspired built form while training future architecture
professionals in the methods of community visioning, organizing, and
leadership.
Design Corps will partner with Neighborhood Housing Services, a national non-profit with local roots. NHS
has established working relationships with local merchants, residents
and children who will work with us to provide the participatory aspect
of the program. They have already established a successful farmers
market in the three block zone.
Primary teacher will be Bryan Bell, Executive Director of Design Corps and Editor of Expanding Architecture - Design as Activism. Bryan Bell has supervised over twenty design/build project, including eleven as a thesis advisor at the Rural Studio.
- Applications: Competitive for 12-student capacity. Parts I, II, and III of application.
- Deadline: Postmarked April 18, 2009. No e-mail applications please. Notification two weeks after receipt of application.

- Deposit: $200 non-refundable, paid upon acceptance
- Fees: The cost of the six-week program is $1,000 per person. This does not include the cost of lodging or food.
- Certificate: Students who complete the program will receive a certificate for their participation. Credits for the class have been arranged for Tulane students. Other students can seek credit through their own programs.
- Transportation: The closest airport is New Orleans International Airport.
Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from
the studio from their home. Participants may bring their own cars.
- Housing: Dorm style housing is provided at additional cost of $15/day. Kitchen facilities are available.
- Waiver of Liability: All participants are required to sign a waiver of liability for the work-site and the housing facility.
- Insurance:
Participants must provide proof of health and accident insurance.
Volunteer Missionary Travel policy can be obtained through Adams and
Associates for $2/person/day.
- Medical: It is highly advised to have a current tetanus shot before participating in the program.
Clothing and Tools:
All basic tools will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own
tools. Participants are strongly advised to wear steel-toed and in any
case stout work boots. Bring work clothes, water bottle, hats,
sunscreen, mosquito repellant, personal toiletries and medicines as
