SFI9 aims to differentiate itself by offering students and emerging professionals the opportunity to share community-based
design projects in a workshop environment, surrounded by peers and
practitioners of varying experience with whom they can address a
specific project hurdle. The
overall goal for this component is to synthesize the knowledge and
experience from Saturday's panelists, present a set of skills to
conference attendees in a hands-on learning environment, assist a group
of attendees in advancing their projects to the next stage, and provide
a practical introduction to the new SEED (Social/Economic/Environmental
Design) Metric.
Project
entrants may apply to address any number of "project hurdles"
including, but certainly not limited to : how to facilitate a community's understanding of the value of design; how to maintain design excellence in a collaborative setting; how to facilitate a community design meeting; or how to establish local social/political/financial support for a design project.
What to Expect
There
will be 10 projects selected for Sunday workshops, each accompanied by
the project entrant, a facilitator and an SFI9 volunteer. As a project
entrant, you would be responsible for providing the context and
framework for the conversation, while the facilitator and SFI9
volunteer will focus on keeping the conversation on task. Each workshop
is expected to last 1 hour and will utilize the SEED Metric as a means
to evaluate the focus project.
Selected
entrants will be asked to provide a master copy for background material
by Thursday, March 19th (e.g., project description, photographs,
sketches, etc.). Any information intended for a handout will be
printed/photocopied by SFI9.
To Apply
Entrants should submit
a one-page .PDF + applicable images that conveys the content/current
status of their project and their relevant experience to sfi9tx@gmail.com.
Any additional information requested will be limited to informal email communication.
The entry deadline is Friday, March 13th.
Entrants will be notified of their participation no later than Monday, March 16th.
We sincerely look forward to reading your submissions and learning more about the future landscape of community-based work!
